Here’s How To Get To Your Applications Quicker To Save Some Time
Having a slow computer can be very frustrating. If you like me, you are probably trying to do just about everything in order to speed up the process of what it is that you are doing. One of the best ways to do this is to get to your most commonly used applications as quickly as possible. Just think of how much time is wasted when you are looking all over your computer trying to find the applications that you use all of the time.
At first it wouldn't seem like much but it would eventually add up as the day goes on, and it would also be a lot more convenient if you could almost instantly get to your applications quicker instead of having to look all over your desktop to find them.
To being, let's start off with the quick launch (if you not sure, the quick launch is that little group of icons that are right beside your start button). If you don't see a little group of icons right beside your start menu, just right click on the taskbar and select Properties and then select Show Quick Launch to get them there. Now, in order for you to do anything you are going to have to unlock the quick launch. To do that, just right click on the task bar and select the Lock Taskbar option. By now you should be able to see some dotted lines which will allow you to resize it the quick launch window. Now all you have to do is to just find the top 3 applications that you use the most and then go through your All Programs list in the start menu and right click on their icons and select Copy. To add them, just go to your desktop, right click and select Paste. Now you should now see a copy of that icon on your desktop - all you have to do now to complete this is to just drag it into the quick launch area and the icon should be in bottom right hand corner next to the start menu (you can delete the shortcut that you copied to your desktop now since you will not be needing it). So every time that you start up your computer or just log on you don't have to look all over the place those 3 programs - there right in front of you.
Now let's work with the Start menu. If you click on your start menu you will notice that there is a faint horizontal line on the left hand side. Everything that is above this line is permanent unless you manually remove them and below this line are programs that you have most recently used. What you're going to want to do here is to add 3-5 programs that you use regularly to the permanent (the top part) of the list. Just go to the All Programs on the start menu, right click on the program icon and select "Pin To Start Menu". This will then put it on the permanent part of the start menu so that you can quickly get to them without having to search around your messy desktop.
Another thing that you can do is to spend some time cleaning up your desktop. Only keep icons for programs - everything else, like random files, you should either delete or place into folders so that they are completely organized and in order so when you go looking for them you know exactly where they are.

If you want to make your slow computer faster, then tuning your virtual memory would be a great place to start. You see, your hard drive is that place that your computer stores files like videos, picture etc... Your RAM on the other hand is the place that your computer's programs work in. Its basically like a temporary working area. It's a great system, but when your RAM gets full your computer has two choices: it can either tell you that you cannot open any more programs or it can find a new place to be used as the temporary working place. This is where virtual memory comes into play. Virutal memory is space on your computers hard drive that will be used the same way that your computer uses RAM
It then has a choice: either tell you that you cannot open any more programs or find a new place to use as its temporary work place. This new place is called virtual memory and is located on your hard drive. The name for the space on your hard drive that the virtual memory occupies is called a Paging File. If you want your slow computer to run a bit quicker all you have to do is to tune your computer Paging File. Here's how to do it:
If you are a Windows XP user just click Start and right click My Computer and now select Properties. Now click on the Advanced tab and then under the area that says "Performance" just click on the Settings icon. A new window should appear. Just click on the Advanced tab at the top of the window and then under the Virtual Memory section, click on Change. Just make sure to look under where it says "Drive [Volume Label]" and make sure that your C: is highlighted. Now just look under Page file size for selected drive and select Custom Size.
Where it says "Total page file size for all drives section" look at the amount that says Recommended. What ever number it says is recommended, type that into both boxes where it says Initial Size and Maximum Size. Click Set and then Ok. Then Click Apply on the next window and OK.
If you are a Windows Vista user, start off by clicking Start. Now click on the Control Panel icon and on the left hand side make sure Classic View is selected. Double click on the System icon and on the left side of the window, click on the Advanced System Settings. Select the Advanced tab in that window and then under the small section that is labeled Performance just click on Settings. A new window should appear so just click on the Advanced tab and under the irtual Memory section, click on Change. Now uncheck the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drivers". Pay attention to the area that says "Drive [Volume Label]" and make sure that C: is selected so that it is highlighted. Look under Page "file size for selected drive" and click on Custom Size. Under the area that says "Total page file size for all drives section" look at the amount that says Recommended. The number that it says should be recommended just type that into both boxes where it says Initial Size and Maximum Size. Now click on Set, then Ok. For the next window just select Apply and Ok also.

How Your Computers Looks Might Be To Blame For It Running Slow
Once of the biggest reasons as to why your computer runs slow has to do with your computer being setup to "look pretty". A lot of your computers resources are being used to make the interface look good and if you were to tune these down, then your computer might be able to run a bit faster.

If you are using Windows XP, click Start, right click on My Computer and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab and where it says "Performance", click on the Settings button. In the Visual Effects tab select Adjust For Best Performance. What you are doing here is making Windows XP look more like Windows 98. If you would like your computer to look somewhat good and still be tuned for performance, select the Custom box, make sure that all of the other boxes are checked off, scroll down to the bottom and select "Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons". Now select Apply and then OK.
If you are running Windows Vista just start by clicking Start in the left hand corner of your screen, right click on Computer and selecting the Properties option. On the left hand side, select the Advanced System Settings. In the advanced tab where it says Performance double click on the Settings button. Now in the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust For Best Performance. This will make your Windows Vista look more like Windows 98, but it will be faster. If you would like to keep the way that your Vista looks, and still have your computers fixed to go faster select the Custom box, make sure that everything is checked off and then select the box that says "Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons". Click Apply and then OK.
So exactly how much of a performance boost should you expect? Usually not that much. I have used this technique on a lot of different computers that run both Windows XP and Vista and the results are very different. Usually for the most part, you will see more of a performance boost on the Vista computers, but with Vista this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of things that you can do to make it faster. For the most part, using this technique has no risk and you can only gain by using it so highly suggest giving it a try.
